Because of the fact that Grottaglie’s economy is based mainly on the cultivation of olives and winemaking, there are numerous mills, established centuries ago. Placed underground for better temperatures, Grottaglie’s mills are mainly found at the historic center, particularly in the Paolotti and the Ceramics districts.
Just outside the historic center is the 16th-century church and convent of St. Francesco da Paola with an interesting system of of natural and man-made caves, including an ancient oil mill and some cisterns.
It is time to visit Grottaglie and learn more about its rich history. Let’s go!
